A sewer cleanout is a capped pipe, usually in the yard near the house, that gives a plumber direct access to your main sewer line. It’s a small fitting, but it makes a big difference when something goes wrong.
Why Your Home Needs One
A lot of older homes in our area were built without an accessible outside cleanout, or the original one was buried, paved over or broken years ago. Without one, the only way into the main line is to pull a toilet or go through a roof vent. That takes longer, costs more and is messier than it needs to be, especially in the middle of a backup.
With a cleanout in place, we can run a camera, clear a clog or hydro jet the line without touching anything inside your house. During a backup, opening the cleanout cap can also relieve the pressure so sewage drains out in the yard instead of coming up through a shower or floor drain.
Two-Way Cleanouts
We usually recommend a two-way cleanout, which allows access both toward the house and toward the street. That lets us service the whole lateral in either direction. Many cities also require a cleanout when a sewer lateral is replaced, so if you’re having sewer repair or trenchless work done, we’ll include one as part of the job.
How Installation Works
We locate the sewer line, dig down to it at a good spot near the foundation, cut in the new fitting and bring the riser up to grade with a cap. Most installs are done in a day, and we put the soil and landscaping back when we’re finished.
If you’ve ever had to wait while a plumber pulled a toilet to clear a main line clog, a cleanout will pay for itself. Call (562) 614-4227 or request a quote. CA License #1027856.
